Ask ten off-grid households how much water storage they have, and you'll get ten different answers, most of them based on a gut feeling rather than any real math. Some people install a single 300 gallon tank and run dry every August. Others sink thousands into a 5,000 gallon cistern they never come close to using. Both are expensive mistakes, just in different directions.
Storage sizing is one of those problems that feels fuzzy until you actually sit down with numbers. Once you do, it stops being a guess and becomes a decision you can defend.
It's tempting to oversize and call it done. Bigger tank, fewer worries, right? Not exactly.
Storage costs money up front, and it costs money to maintain. Every gallon you store has to be pumped in, filtered if needed, and protected from freezing, algae, and contamination. A tank that's far larger than your actual use means water sits longer before it's used, which raises the odds of stagnation, sediment buildup, and off tastes. Water isn't like fuel. It doesn't improve with age.
On the flip side, undersizing means you're one dry spell, one broken pump, or one unexpected guest away from a real problem. Pumps fail, power to the pump fails, and seasonal water tables shift. Storage is your buffer against all of that.
The goal is a number that matches your actual household, your actual climate, and your actual risk tolerance, not a round number that sounded good at the hardware store.
Before you can size a tank, you need a real number for how much water your household uses per day. Most sizing guides throw out a generic "50 gallons per person per day" figure borrowed from municipal water studies. That number includes long showers, running dishwashers, watering lawns, and topping off swimming pools. It has almost nothing to do with how most off-grid households actually live.
A more honest starting point for off-grid living, where people are already conscious of every gallon, looks more like this:
Add those up and most careful off-grid households land somewhere between 15 and 30 gallons per person per day for indoor use alone. That's a wide range, and where you fall in it depends on how you shower, whether you use a composting toilet (see our breakdown of composting toilets if you haven't settled that question yet) or an outhouse, and how much laundry you do on site versus in town.
The only way to get a real number is to track it. For two weeks, note how many times you fill a jug, run a hose, or top off a tank. Multiply that by your household size and you'll have a daily baseline that's yours, not a textbook average.
Once you know your daily use, storage sizing becomes a question of how many days of buffer you want between "something goes wrong" and "we're out of water."
A reasonable framework:
Multiply your daily household use by the number of buffer days you want, and you have your target storage volume. A family of four using 25 gallons per person per day, aiming for a 10 day comfortable buffer, needs 1,000 gallons of storage. That's a very different number than "get the biggest tank that fits," and it's one you can actually justify.
Your source matters as much as your household size. A drilled well with a reliable static water level and a working pump needs less storage than a rainwater catchment system in a region with long dry summers.
If your primary source is a well, your storage is mostly insurance against pump or power failure. A pressure tank plus a few days of backup storage may be enough, especially if you have a generator or solar backup for the pump itself. If you're catching rainwater, storage isn't insurance, it's your entire supply. You need enough volume to carry you through the driest month of the year, not just the driest week. We've covered the details of safe collection in our post on how to collect and store rainwater, but sizing for catchment specifically means looking at your roof's collection area, your region's driest consecutive weeks, and building storage around that gap, not around an average annual rainfall number that hides the dry stretches.
Many off-grid households end up with a hybrid setup: a well or spring as primary source, with rainwater catchment and storage as backup, or the reverse. In that case, size your storage around whichever source is least reliable in your specific location, since that's the one storage is actually protecting you from.
Where you live changes both your usage and your storage needs, sometimes significantly.
In hot, dry climates, garden and livestock watering can dwarf household use, especially in peak summer months. In cold climates, storage sizing runs into a different problem: freezing. Aboveground tanks in a hard winter can freeze solid unless they're buried below the frost line, insulated, heated, or kept indoors in something like a mechanical room or root cellar. A tank that's technically the right size on paper does you no good if it's a block of ice in January. A few mistakes show up again and again in off-grid water planning:
A workable process looks like this: track your actual daily use for two weeks, decide on a buffer window based on your source's reliability and your local climate risks, add a separate allowance for garden, livestock, or fire needs if they apply, and then choose tank size, material, and placement based on that total, not the other way around.
It's slower than just buying a tank and hoping, but it's the difference between storage that quietly does its job for years and storage that either wastes money or leaves you short exactly when you need it most.
Water storage sizing isn't glamorous, but getting it right is one of the quieter, more important decisions in building a place that actually works when you live there full time.
