Terms of Service
The plain-English terms for using the Live Off The Grid website: what the site is, how to use it fairly, how my affiliate links and guidance work, and the usual legal basics, written to be read rather than to trip you up.
Last updated: August 24, 2026
Welcome to Live Off The Grid (liveoffthegrid.com). These Terms of Use ("Terms") explain the rules that apply when you visit my website, read my guides, subscribe to my email newsletter, or otherwise use the content I publish. Please read them carefully. By accessing or using this website in any way, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree with any part of them, please do not use the site.
Acceptance of These Terms
By visiting Live Off The Grid, signing up for my newsletter, clicking on links within my content, or otherwise interacting with anything I publish, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to these Terms of Use, as well as my Privacy Policy and my Affiliate Disclosure. If you are using this site on behalf of yourself only, that is fine, this is a consumer information site; free membership accounts and community areas are covered in the section on accounts and community content below, and there are no paid services. I may update these Terms from time to time, and your continued use of the site after changes are posted means you accept the updated version.
What This Website Is
Live Off The Grid is a free, independent, educational and informational website and email newsletter about off-grid living topics such as solar power, water systems, backup power, homesteading, self-sufficiency, and related lifestyle subjects. I publish articles, guides, checklists, product roundups, and occasional recommendations based on my own research, experience, and opinions.
I am not a contractor, installer, engineering firm, financial advisory, or service provider of any kind. I do not perform work at anyone's property, I do not provide quotes for labor or materials, and I do not take bookings or appointments. Nothing on this site involves me doing anything for you personally beyond providing information you can read and decide how to use on your own. The site is supported in part through affiliate advertising, which is explained in more detail below and on my Affiliate Disclosure page.
General Information Only, Not Professional Advice
Everything published on Live Off The Grid, including articles, guides, checklists, emails, comments, and any downloadable material, is provided for general informational and educational purposes only. It is not, and should never be treated as, professional engineering, electrical, construction, structural, financial, medical, or legal advice.
Off-grid systems often involve electrical wiring, batteries, solar arrays, generators, fuel storage, plumbing, ventilation, and structural work. These are specialized subjects where mistakes can cause real harm. My content is meant to help you learn concepts and ask better questions, not to replace a licensed or qualified professional who can evaluate your specific situation in person. Before you design, install, modify, or repair any off-grid system, or make any financial or legal decision related to your property or lifestyle, you should consult an appropriately licensed local professional, and you should confirm what permits, inspections, or local building and electrical codes apply where you live. Codes and regulations vary widely by location and change over time, and I cannot track or account for the rules in every jurisdiction my readers live in.
Assumption of Risk
Off-grid living, by its nature, involves activities and equipment that can be dangerous if planned or executed incorrectly. This includes but is not limited to electrical systems, solar panels and inverters, batteries, generators, propane and other fuels, open flame and heat sources, water storage and purification systems, and structural modifications to buildings or land.
By using this website, you acknowledge and agree that:
- Any decision to act on information found on Live Off The Grid, including trying a project, buying equipment, or changing how your home or property operates, is made entirely at your own discretion and risk.
- You are solely responsible for your own safety, the safety of others on your property, and compliance with all applicable laws, codes, permit requirements, and manufacturer instructions.
- I have no way of knowing the specific conditions of your property, climate, equipment, skill level, or local regulations, and my general content cannot account for those details.
- You will seek out a qualified, licensed local professional for any electrical, structural, plumbing, gas, or similarly specialized work rather than relying solely on information from this website.
I care about my readers and want everyone to stay safe, but I cannot supervise or verify how anyone applies the information I publish, and I am not responsible for injuries, property damage, financial loss, or other harm that may result from using or misusing this content.
Accuracy of Information and No Warranty
I do my best to research topics carefully, keep articles updated, and present information that is accurate and useful at the time of publication. That said, off-grid technology, products, pricing, regulations, and best practices change over time, and I cannot guarantee that every page on this site is complete, current, or free of errors.
All content on Live Off The Grid is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of accuracy, completeness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. You use the information on this site at your own discretion, and I encourage you to independently verify anything important, especially product specifications, safety information, and legal or code requirements, before relying on it.
Affiliate Links and Advertising Disclosure
Live Off The Grid participates in affiliate marketing programs. This means that some links on my site and in my newsletter go to third-party retailers or service providers, and if you click through and make a purchase, I may earn a commission. This comes at no extra cost to you, the price you pay is the same whether or not you use my link.
Being part of an affiliate program never changes what I recommend. I aim to write honestly about products and tools based on my own research, experience, and understanding of the off-grid space, regardless of whether a link is monetized. Not every link on the site is an affiliate link, and not every product I mention is one I personally use, but my opinions are my own. For more detail on how affiliate relationships work and how I handle them, please see my Affiliate Disclosure page.
Intellectual Property
The articles, guides, graphics, logos, photos, and other original material on Live Off The Grid are owned by me or used with permission, and are protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. You are welcome to read, bookmark, and share links to my content for personal, non-commercial use.
You may not copy, republish, redistribute, or use my content for commercial purposes, including reposting full articles on other websites, without my prior written permission. If you would like to quote a short excerpt with a clear link back to the original page, that is generally fine and appreciated, but wholesale copying is not permitted. Any third-party trademarks, brand names, product names, or logos referenced on this site belong to their respective owners, and their appearance here does not imply endorsement of Live Off The Grid by those companies, or endorsement of them by me, unless specifically stated.
Acceptable Use of the Site
When using Live Off The Grid, you agree not to:
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the website, my email systems, or related accounts.
- Use automated tools to scrape, copy, or republish large portions of my content without permission.
- Upload or transmit any material that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, defamatory, or otherwise objectionable through any comment section or contact form I may offer.
- Interfere with the normal operation of the site, including introducing viruses, malware, or other harmful code.
- Misrepresent your identity or affiliation with Live Off The Grid.
I reserve the right to restrict or block access to the site for anyone who violates these Terms or otherwise misuses the site.
Third-Party Links and Brands
My content often links to outside websites, including retailers, manufacturers, government resources, and other informational sites. I include these links because I think they may be useful, but I do not control those websites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy, availability, or privacy practices. Visiting a third-party site is at your own discretion, and you should review that site's own terms and privacy policy. A link from my site to another does not imply my endorsement of everything on that site, and a mention of a brand or product does not imply that company endorses Live Off The Grid.
User Submissions, Comments, and Honest Reviews
If I offer comment sections, feedback forms, or ways to submit questions or product experiences, I expect that any submissions be honest and reflect your genuine views or experiences. I do not create, buy, or post fake reviews, and I ask that readers who contribute comments or feedback hold themselves to the same standard.
By submitting a comment, question, or other content to me, you grant me permission to use, edit, and publish that submission in connection with the site or newsletter, and you confirm that it is your own original contribution and does not infringe on anyone else's rights. I reserve the right to remove or decline to publish any submission for any reason, including spam, offensive content, or anything that appears dishonest or misleading.
Accounts and Community Content
This site offers a free membership account that unlocks community areas: the forum, classifieds, real estate listings, and personals. Creating an account is optional; every guide, calculator, and reference on the site works without one. There are no paid memberships or paid services.
Your account. You agree to provide a working email address, to keep your login credentials to yourself, and to be responsible for activity under your account. You must be at least 18 to create an account, and the personals area is strictly limited to adults 18 and over. You can delete your account at any time from your account page or by asking me; deletion removes your profile, and you can ask for your posts and listings to be removed with it.
Your content. Anything you post in the community areas (forum posts, classified ads, real estate listings, personals profiles, photos) remains yours. By posting, you give this site a non-exclusive license to display, store, and moderate that content so the community can function; the license ends for content you delete, except in quotations others have made or backups kept for a short period.
House rules. No illegal content, no harassment, no spam or undisclosed commercial promotion, no scams (especially in classifieds and real estate: never wire money to a stranger), no impersonation, no posting anyone's private information, and nothing sexually explicit. Listings must describe real items and real properties you have the right to sell or represent. I may edit, remove, or refuse any content and may suspend or close accounts that break these rules, with or without notice; where practical I will say why.
Community content is user content. Posts, ads, and listings from members are their statements, not mine, and are not verified by me unless a page explicitly says so. Deal with other members using the same care you would with any stranger on the internet.
Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Live Off The Grid, its owner, and anyone else involved in creating or publishing this site will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of property, income, data, or personal injury, arising out of or related to your use of, or inability to use, this website or any information, product, or service referenced on it, even if I have been advised of the possibility of such damages.
This includes, without limitation, any harm resulting from off-grid projects, equipment purchases made through affiliate links, reliance on general information in place of professional advice, or third-party websites linked from my content. My total liability for any claim relating to the site will not exceed the amount, if any, you have paid me directly, which for most readers will be zero, since my content and newsletter are free.
Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Live Off The Grid, its owner, and any contributors, from and against any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising out of your misuse of the site, your violation of these Terms, or your use of any information, product, or recommendation found here in a way that causes harm to yourself or others.
Governing Law
These Terms are governed by and will be interpreted in accordance with the laws applicable in the location where the owner of Live Off The Grid resides, without regard to conflict of law principles. If any part of these Terms is found to be unenforceable under applicable law, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
Changes to These Terms
I may revise these Terms from time to time to reflect changes in how the site operates, legal requirements, or general best practices. When I make changes, I will update the "last updated" date associated with this page. I encourage you to check back occasionally, since continued use of the site after updates are posted means you accept the revised Terms.
