  • Solar and power. A small cabin system covering lights, a fridge, and basic electronics might run from a few thousand dollars for panels, a charge controller, and a modest battery bank, up to five figures for a whole-house system with enough battery storage and inverter capacity to run a well pump, power tools, and modern appliances. Backup generators add a separate line item, typically low thousands for a portable unit and considerably more for an automatic standby model.
  • Water. A drilled well with casing and a submersible pump is usually the priciest option, often costing more than the entire solar array in areas with deep water tables. Rainwater catchment with tanks and filtration tends to be cheaper upfront but depends on annual rainfall and roof area.
