Off-Grid Living in Amity, Maine

I'll be upfront: Amity, Maine is a very small organized town in Aroostook County (population around 250), and I could not find a published zoning ordinance, zoning map, or code enforcement page anywhere on the town's official website (townofamity.com). That's not unusual for a town this size, some small Maine towns run with minimal or no local zoning, but I can't confirm one way or the other from official sources, so treat everything below as "needs a phone call" territory.

Zoning and land use. Maine's Mandatory Shoreland Zoning Act (a state law, administered locally) requires shoreland zoning around water bodies in every Maine town, including small ones, so if your parcel touches a lake, pond, river, or wetland, some state-driven shoreland rule likely applies even if Amity has no general zoning ordinance. Beyond that, whether Amity has adopted broader zoning covering dwellings, RVs, or land use generally is not confirmed. Don't assume "no ordinance found online" means "no ordinance"; small towns often keep paper records at the town office.

Building permits and codes. Maine's statewide building code (MUBEC) is mandatory only for towns over about 4,000 people, so Amity is not automatically required to enforce it.
