Most off-grid failures do not happen because someone picked the wrong solar panel or the wrong pump. They happen because nobody ran the system long enough, through enough weather, to find out what actually breaks. A weekend test tells you almost nothing. A 90-day shakedown tells you everything, because it forces your systems through at least one full stretch of bad weather, one water crisis, one power crunch, and one moment where you have to fix something with what's on hand instead of what's on order.
This is the single most useful thing you can do before you commit fully to off-grid life, whether that means selling your current home, quitting a job, or just sinking real money into a permanent setup. Ninety days is long enough to stop lying to yourself about what works.
Thirty days sounds reasonable, but it almost never includes a real cold snap, a multi-day cloudy stretch, a wind event, and a mechanical failure all in the same window. Weather patterns move in cycles longer than a month in most climates. A 90-day trial, especially if you can position it across a seasonal shift (late fall into winter, or spring into summer), gives your systems a chance to show their limits under more than one kind of stress.
It also gives you time to move past the honeymoon phase. The first two weeks off-grid are usually euphoric. Everything feels novel and satisfying. Problems that would normally irritate you get waved off as "part of the adventure." By day 45 or so, the novelty wears thin and you start noticing the actual friction points: the water pump that cycles too often, the battery bank that dips uncomfortably low every third cloudy day, the wood stove that needs feeding every four hours through the night. That friction is the data you need.
The mistake most people make is treating the trial period as an extended camping trip. You bring extra supplies "just in case," you keep the truck gassed up for a supply run, and you quietly fall back on conveniences the moment something feels hard. That defeats the purpose.
Instead, decide in advance what your actual off-grid rules will be once you're committed, and follow them during the test:
That log becomes your most valuable output from the whole 90 days. Patterns that are invisible day to day become obvious once you have three months of numbers next to notes like "cloudy, batteries at 40% by 6pm" or "well pump tripped breaker twice this week."
Solar system sizing calculators give you numbers based on average sun hours for your region, but averages hide the bad stretches that actually matter. A shakedown period is where you learn your true worst-case production, not your average.
Track these specifically:
If you find your battery bank regularly dips below 30 to 40 percent state of charge during a normal week, and not just during a freak storm, that's a sizing problem, not a bad luck problem. Ninety days is long enough to tell the difference between "one unusually bad week" and "this system is undersized for where I live."
This is also the point where you should think hard about backup fuel and spare parts. A generator that runs great for a week can still fail from a bad fuel filter, a dead battery, or a part you didn't know was wearing out. Water systems tend to fail quietly. A well pump that's slightly undersized, a filter that clogs faster than expected, a rainwater catchment system that can't keep up during a dry spell, these things don't announce themselves until you're mid-crisis.

The households that struggle most in year one are usually the ones who never tested their water system under real stress before committing. They assumed the numbers on paper would hold, and then the first dry August proved otherwise.
It's easy to size solar and water and forget that daily life off-grid is made of small repeated tasks: keeping a fire going, hauling wood, refilling propane, cooking without always defaulting to the microwave. The shakedown period is where you find out if these tasks are sustainable for your actual household, not just for you on a good day.
If you have kids in the house, this is also a good window to start handing over real responsibilities rather than treating them as guests on the property. Systems aren't the only thing under trial. Ninety days is enough time to feel the early edges of social isolation, especially if you're used to a busier social calendar. It's worth paying attention to how you and anyone else in the household are doing mentally and socially during the test, not just how the batteries are doing.
If you notice visits from friends or family already tapering off, or find yourself avoiding the effort of hosting because the property feels far away, that's worth taking seriously now. The same goes for physical safety and security. At the end of 90 days, sit down with your log and be honest. Some outcomes will point to simple fixes: add another battery, install a bigger water tank, keep more spare filters on hand. Others might point to bigger questions, like whether the property gets enough sun in winter, or whether the household actually wants this pace of life full time.
Either answer is a good outcome. The entire point of a shakedown period is to find these things out while you still have options, not after you've sold the house and there's no easy way back.
