The question isn't whether you can homeschool off-grid. People have been teaching kids without power lines or internet for as long as there have been kids. The real question is whether you can build a school day that actually works with your specific setup, your specific kids, and the specific limits of your land, your power budget, and your nearest town.

I get asked about this a lot from people who are still in the planning stages of a move, and I think that's the right time to think it through, because the mistakes I hear about with off-grid schooling tend to be mistakes of assumption. They assume the internet will be there when they need it. They assume the kids will just adapt. They assume "a few hours a day" will be enough structure. Some of that turns out true. A lot of it doesn't.

Start with what your state actually requires

Before anything else, figure out the legal side, because it varies enormously by state and sometimes by county. The socialization question, honestly

There's no single right curriculum for off-grid families, but some approaches fit the lifestyle better than others by nature. Nature-based and place-based curricula work with your surroundings instead of against them, letting biology, ecology, and even math lessons come from the actual land you're on. Charlotte Mason style approaches lean on real books and outdoor observation rather than screens and workbooks, which suits a household without reliable power for tablets.

Classical curricula built around physical textbooks and memorization work well because they don't depend on connectivity at all. Unit studies that combine subjects around a real project, like building a chicken coop and covering the math, biology, and even history of poultry keeping in one go, fit naturally with the actual work happening on an off-grid property, since kids are often already involved in that work anyway.

Whatever you choose, buy the physical materials rather than relying on digital licenses that expire or need re-downloading. A shelf of workbooks doesn't care if your internet is down or your battery bank is low.

Teaching real off-grid skills as part of school, not instead of it

One advantage off-grid families have that in-town families mostly don't is that a huge amount of genuinely valuable education happens as a byproduct of daily life, if you let it count. Understanding how a solar system works, including the reasoning behind wire gauge and fuse sizing, is real electrical education. Helping plan a year-round food plan covers biology, chemistry, math, and economics all at once. Learning to recognize hypothermia and heat illness is health education that matters more when help is far away.

The trick is documenting it as instruction rather than letting it disappear as "just chores," both for your own recordkeeping if your state requires it, and because it helps kids see the connection between what they're doing with their hands and what they're learning. A logbook that says "calculated feed costs per pound of eggs produced, October" is real math instruction, tied to something the kids can see the result of.

What to have on hand before you start

A few practical things make the first year much smoother. A dedicated, quiet space for schoolwork matters even in a small cabin, because kids need somewhere that isn't also the kitchen table mid-canning-season. Print curriculum with an eye toward paper and ink supply, since running out of printer ink an hour from the nearest store is its own kind of school delay.

Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank option for basic calculators and a backup light source for early winter evenings when school runs past dark, and keep your state's reporting paperwork in a physical folder, not just a phone, since phones die at the worst times.
