Clear water is not the same thing as safe water. That's the first hard lesson for a lot of people who move off-grid and assume that because their well runs clean and cold, it must be fine to drink. Some of the nastiest contaminants (nitrates, arsenic, coliform bacteria, certain heavy metals) have no taste, no smell, and no color at all. You can only find them by testing, and testing is one of those chores that's easy to keep putting off because nothing seems wrong. This is the piece that ties together everything else you've done for water on your property. You can size your storage right, filter it well, and still get sick or slowly poisoned if you never check what's actually coming out of the ground or off your roof.

Why "it looks fine" isn't good enough

Heavy metals like lead and copper leaching from old pipe, fittings, or solder, especially in a system you inherited rather than built
Total dissolved solids (TDS) that affect taste and can hint at bigger mineral or contamination issues

What to test for, realistically
You don't need to test for everything every time. A tiered approach keeps costs and effort reasonable while still catching the things that actually matter.
Baseline test (do this once, when you first get water from a new source):
Total coliform and E. coli
Nitrate and nitrite
pH
Total dissolved solids (TDS)
Hardness
Iron and manganese
Arsenic
Lead and copper (especially if there's any older plumbing involved)
This baseline panel is often sold as a "well water package" through state health department labs, university extension programs, or private certified labs. Some state agricultural extension offices and health departments offer well testing kits, so check what they charge and whether the lab is certified before paying full retail somewhere else.
Annual retest (every year, non-negotiable):
Total coliform and E. coli
Nitrate
pH
Bacteria and nitrate levels can shift year to year based on rainfall, septic conditions, agricultural activity nearby, or a well casing that's slowly failing. This is the cheap, fast test that catches the most common and most urgent problems.
After any of these events, test again regardless of schedule:
Flooding or heavy runoff near the wellhead
Any work done on the well, pump, or casing
A noticeable change in taste, smell, color, or clarity
Anyone in the household gets unexplained GI illness
A new septic system installed nearby, yours or a neighbor's
Long periods of disuse (a cabin sitting empty over winter)
Wells, rainwater, and springs each need a different testing mindset
Drilled or driven wells are generally more protected from surface contamination than open sources, but they're not immune. A cracked casing, a bad seal at the wellhead, or a shallow water table can let surface bacteria in fast. Don't skip that first test just because the well is brand new. New doesn't mean clean, especially if there was any surface disturbance during drilling.
Rainwater catchment is a completely different animal. You're not testing for underground minerals, you're testing for what's on your roof and in your tank: bird droppings, roofing material runoff (especially with older asphalt shingles or galvanized metal with lead solder), algae growth in the tank, and bacteria from organic debris. Rainwater should generally get a bacteria test more frequently than a well, at least twice a year, because open or semi-open storage tanks are more exposed to recontamination than a sealed well casing hundreds of feet underground.
Springs are the trickiest of the three because they're essentially untreated surface water that happens to come out of the ground already, and they're directly exposed to whatever is upslope of them: wildlife, livestock, old logging roads, seasonal runoff. Spring water should be tested at least as often as rainwater, and ideally you'd walk the watershed above the spring at least once to get a sense of what could be draining into it.
Reading the results without losing your mind
Lab reports can look intimidating, full of units like mg/L and MCL (maximum contaminant level) comparisons that mean nothing if you've never seen one before. A few practical notes:
Any positive result for E. coli or total coliform means don't drink it until it's addressed. This usually means shock chlorination of the well or a filtration/UV step before use, followed by a retest to confirm it's clear.
Nitrate above 10 mg/L (as nitrogen) is the standard health threshold, particularly dangerous for infants and pregnant women. This is one of the more common issues near agricultural land or septic systems.
Arsenic has no safe "just filter it a little" answer. If your baseline test shows arsenic above the health guideline, you need a specific treatment system (reverse osmosis or an arsenic-specific media filter), not just a standard carbon filter.
Hardness and iron/manganese aren't usually health hazards, they're nuisance issues (staining, scale buildup, bad taste) that affect which filtration approach makes sense. Building the habit, not just the one-time test

Know your local lab options before you need them. State extension offices, county health departments, and certified private labs all vary in turnaround time and price. Look this up when you first move in, not during an emergency when your only water source runs cloudy.

When to bring in outside help
DIY test strips sold at hardware stores are fine for a quick pH or hardness check, but they are not reliable for bacteria, nitrate, or heavy metals at the sensitivity levels that actually matter for health decisions. For anything beyond a rough gut check, send a sample to a certified lab. Many state health departments maintain lists of certified labs, and the process is usually just mailing a sealed sample with proper handling (some tests require the sample to arrive within 24 to 48 hours, refrigerated).
If a test comes back with a real problem, that's the point to bring in a water treatment professional rather than guessing at a fix. Arsenic and nitrate removal, in particular, are not solved by adding a random filter you saw online. They need the right specific technology matched to your water chemistry and flow rate.
Water testing isn't glamorous and it doesn't feel urgent until it very suddenly is. But it's one of the cheapest, most concrete things you can do to protect your household, and it turns "I think our water's fine" into "I know our water's fine," which is a much better place to build a life from.
