Off-Grid Living in Perry County, Mississippi

I dig into rural counties across the country for Live Off The Grid, and Perry County, Mississippi, is one of the harder ones to pin down, mostly because so little is published online. Here's what I found, and just as important, what I couldn't confirm.

If you're buying raw land outside those towns, I'd still call the county to double-check nothing's changed.

Dwellings, tiny homes, RVs. No Perry County rule on this turned up in my research. Mississippi has no statewide tiny-home law, so whether an RV or tiny house counts as a permanent dwelling is a county-by-county call, and Perry County's stance isn't confirmed.

This one's solid: the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) runs the statewide Onsite Wastewater Program under the state's individual on-site wastewater law, and that's what governs septic and composting systems in Perry County. The Perry County Health Department serves as the local contact point for this state program.

Greywater. No county-specific rule exists, so the state's general approach applies, MSDH treats greywater as wastewater needing an approved disposal method under the same onsite program as septic.

Rainwater harvesting. I found nothing restricting rain barrels or cisterns at the county or state level, so ordinary residential rainwater collection appears to be fine.

Wells. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) sets statewide well construction and groundwater standards. No Perry County-specific well ordinance surfaced in my research, so MDEQ's rules are what govern.

Utilities. Off-grid power generation appears legal, but I found no Perry County statement on going fully disconnected from utilities, so the general state-level uncertainty around full disconnection (tied to code compliance in some cases) applies by default.
