This matters because it tells you what kind of problem you have. If you get one bar in one specific spot (the "magic rock" phenomenon many rural homesteaders know well), a cell signal booster might solve almost everything for a fraction of the cost of satellite gear. If you get truly nothing, no matter where you stand, you're in satellite or radio territory, and boosters are a waste of money.
A cellular signal booster (sometimes called a repeater) takes a weak signal from outside, amplifies it, and rebroadcasts it inside a building or vehicle. Brands like WeBoost and SureCall dominate this space. Prices generally run from around $150 for basic single-user models up to $500-$600 for whole-cabin or multi-user systems with a higher-gain outdoor antenna.
The catch, and it's a big one, is that a booster amplifies existing signal. It cannot create signal where there is none. If your property gets zero bars everywhere, no booster will fix that. Boosters are best for the common situation where a weak, unreliable signal exists (say, at the property line or a high point) and you want that signal usable inside the cabin or barn. A good outdoor Yagi-style directional antenna aimed at the nearest tower, paired with an in-building amplifier, can turn an unusable trickle of signal into something you can actually make calls and send texts on.
Power draw is modest, most boosters run on 12V and pull only a few watts, so they pair easily with a modest solar setup. If you're already working out your electrical loads for other gear, this is a rounding error compared to something like refrigeration or a well pump.
When there is no cell signal anywhere on your property or along your regular routes, satellite communicators become the realistic answer. These are small, battery-powered devices that send short text messages and GPS coordinates via satellite networks, independent of any cell tower.
The two names most people encounter are the Garmin inReach line and the Zoleo satellite communicator. Both work on the Iridium satellite network, which has genuinely global coverage including polar regions. Devices typically cost $250-$400 up front, and then require a monthly subscription, usually somewhere between $15 and $50 depending on how many messages you send and whether you want tracking features. Some plans allow you to pause service in months you don't need it, which matters if you split time between an off-grid property and a place with normal connectivity.
What these devices do well: two-way text messaging to any phone number or email, SOS activation that routes to a real emergency coordination center, and location sharing so family knows where you are. What they don't do: voice calls (with rare, expensive exceptions), fast data, or anything resembling normal phone use. Typing a message on the small device keyboard is slow, though most people pair the unit via Bluetooth to a phone app for easier typing when the phone itself has no signal but still has battery and the app installed.
The honest limitation worth stating clearly: message delivery isn't instant. Satellite messages can take anywhere from under a minute to 20 minutes or more depending on your view of the sky, satellite pass timing, and weather. This is not a system for split-second communication. It's a system for "I'm okay, expect me tomorrow" or "send help, here's my location," not for real-time back-and-forth.
For anyone setting up a homestead where a household member might be out alone doing chores, clearing trail, or working a woodlot, a satellite messenger is arguably the single highest-value piece of safety gear you can buy, more important than most tools in a first-aid kit, because it's the thing that gets help moving when something goes wrong and no one's around to hear you shout.
If two-way voice calling matters to you, perhaps because you have medical concerns, young kids, or simply want to talk to family rather than text, a satellite phone is the next step up. Iridium and Inmarsat handsets run $700-$1,500 to purchase, or can be rented for trips, with per-minute call costs or monthly plans that often start around $50-$100 for limited minutes and climb from there.
Satellite phones are bulkier, need a clear view of sky exactly like messengers, and voice quality has a noticeable satellite delay. For year-round off-grid living, most people find the combination of a satellite messenger (cheap, reliable for text and SOS) plus occasional trips to town for phone calls covers their needs better than the added expense of a full satellite phone plan. But if your situation involves genuine medical risk, remote elderly family members, or a business that needs voice contact, the satellite phone earns its cost.
Satellite gear solves the "reach the outside world" problem. It does nothing for the very common off-grid need of talking to the person in the barn, the greenhouse, or the neighboring property half a mile away. This is where two-way radios come in, and they're often underrated because people assume cell phones should handle this and get frustrated when they don't.
GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) radios are the practical choice for most homesteads. Unlike the older FRS "bubble pack" walkie-talkies, GMRS radios can run higher power (up to 50 watts for base stations) and use repeaters to extend range dramatically, often to 20-30 miles across varied terrain when a repeater is well placed on high ground. A GMRS license from the FCC costs a flat fee (no test required) and covers your whole family. Handheld units run $30-$150 each, mobile/base units with real range run $150-$400, and a repeater setup adds more, but for a family homestead this is often the most cost-effective way to maintain internal communication across a large property, especially paired with solar-powered repeater stations on a hill or in a tall tree.
Ham radio (amateur radio) goes further still, with more frequency options, higher power limits, and the ability to reach other operators regionally or even globally under the right conditions, but it requires passing a license exam. For homesteaders serious about long-term self-reliance and community-level emergency communication, a technician-class ham license is a worthwhile winter project, and many rural emergency response networks are built on ham operators who can relay information when everything else is down.

Satellite messengers and phones need to see a decent patch of open sky to lock onto a satellite, they don't work well under dense tree canopy or inside buildings. Get in the habit of stepping into a clearing to send a message rather than trying from the porch under a fir canopy.
Radio range is almost entirely about antenna height, not raw power. A repeater on a ridge or in a tall tree will outperform a much stronger radio at ground level. It's worth being honest about limits. None of these systems replace a well-thought-out safety plan: telling someone your route before you head out, carrying basic first aid, knowing your own physical limits. A satellite messenger gets help moving, but help in a genuinely remote area can still be hours away. Radios have real range limits set by terrain, and a repeater failure (dead battery, storm damage) can silently cut your range back down to a mile or two without warning, so periodic testing matters more than people expect.
It's also worth thinking about how communication gear fits into the rest of your self-reliance planning.
