Many discussions of off-grid living seem to start with the wrong question. They ask "what solar panels should I buy" when the real first question is "what does my life actually need to run, and on what schedule." Get that backwards and you end up with an expensive system that still leaves you cold, dark, or hauling water in a truck at 6 a.m. Get it right and you build something that quietly works, year after year, without drama.

This post is a rewrite of an older piece we ran on this topic. We are expanding it because the questions we hear from readers have gotten more specific over the years. People are not asking "is off-grid living possible" anymore. They are asking "how many kilowatt-hours does a well pump actually use" and "what happens to my batteries in a week of clouds." So let's get into it.

Start with load, not with gear

Every off-grid power system is sized around a number: how many watt-hours you consume in an average day, and how many you consume on your worst day. Skip this step and every other decision downstream is a guess.

Walk through your home and list every device that draws power: refrigerator, chest freezer, well pump, lights, laptop chargers, a router, a space heater if you use one, power tools, a washing machine. For each one, find the wattage (usually printed on the appliance or its power supply) and estimate hours of daily use. Multiply watts by hours to get watt-hours per day, then add it all up.

A refrigerator is often one of the larger steady draws in an off-grid home, partly because it cycles on and off throughout the day rather than running once, so check your own model's rating. A well pump is a short but intense draw, so check the wattage on your own pump's nameplate, since surge demand matters for sizing your inverter even if total daily energy is small.

Once you have a daily watt-hour number, multiply it by 1.25 to 1.4 to build in a safety margin for inefficiency and for the days when you simply use more than usual. That adjusted number is what your solar array and battery bank need to be able to deliver, not just on a sunny July afternoon, but in December when the sun is low and the days are short.

Solar sizing and the "worst month" trap

One mistake worth avoiding is sizing a solar array on annual average sun hours instead of the worst month at the site, since your loads do not shrink in winter. If you live somewhere with real winters, winter solar production can be far lower than midsummer, so look up month-by-month production estimates for your own location. If your loads stay roughly constant year round (and a refrigerator's do), you need to size for the lean month, not the average.

This is where a generator earns its keep. Even a well-designed off-grid solar system benefits from a backup generator sized to run your heaviest loads and top off batteries during a multi-day cloudy stretch. Thinking of the generator as a failure of the system is the wrong framing. Thinking of it as insurance against the one week a year when solar simply cannot keep up is the right one.

Battery capacity should give you two to three days of autonomy at your average daily use, discharged only to the depth your battery chemistry tolerates well. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are generally rated for deeper, more frequent cycling than lead-acid designs and usually cost more upfront, so compare the cycle life figures on each manufacturer's data sheet. Whichever chemistry you choose, the manufacturer's data sheet on recommended depth of discharge and charge temperature range is worth reading closely before you buy, not after.

Water: the part people underestimate

Solar gets the attention, but water is usually the harder problem. If you are not on a municipal connection, you are looking at one of a few options: a drilled well with a submersible pump, a spring development, rainwater catchment, or hauled water. Each has a different failure mode.

A drilled well is often reliable but typically the most expensive option to install, and the pump is an electrical load you need to plan for in your power budget, so get local drilling quotes. Rainwater catchment is cheap to set up but entirely dependent on rainfall patterns and requires enough roof area and storage tankage to bridge dry stretches. Check your state or local health department's guidance on private drinking water wells for testing requirements, including which contaminants are relevant in your region.

Whatever your source, plan storage capacity for at least a week of interruption, more if you are remote. And test your water. It is easy to assume that because water is clear and cold it is clean. Assumptions are not a substitute for a lab test.

Food storage that actually gets used

A pantry that just sits there quietly expiring is not a food reserve, it is a slow-motion waste pile. The better approach is a rotating system where you are always eating the oldest items and restocking behind them, so nothing ages out unnoticed. The short version: buy what you already eat, in quantities you can realistically cycle through, and organize your shelves so the newest cans go to the back and the oldest come forward. Date everything with a marker when it comes in the door. This single habit does more for food security than any specific brand of freeze-dried meal.

The access problem nobody budgets for

Off-grid properties are often at the end of a long driveway or a shared gravel road, and that road is frequently the least examined part of the purchase. Who maintains it. Who plows it in winter. What happens if the neighbor who has always graded it decides to stop, or sells to someone who has no interest in the arrangement. A beautiful piece of land with an ambiguous or nonexistent road agreement can turn into a legal and logistical headache that costs far more than the land itself was worth. This is worth taking seriously, and much of the risk can be reduced with a title search and a conversation with the neighbors before closing.

Heat, animals, and the parts that don't run on electrons

If you are heating with wood, your chainsaw, splitting maul, and a reliable way to season wood a year ahead of time matter more than any app or gadget. If you keep animals, feeding them correctly through winter is its own math problem. It is also worth having tools on hand that do not depend on power at all. A grid failure that takes out your well pump does not have to take out your ability to grind grain, sharpen a blade, or run a drill. Health, aging in place, and the honest parts of the plan

Off-grid living tends to attract people who are capable and self-sufficient, which is exactly why it is easy to skip planning for the day that is not true anymore. Making it a life, not just a system

None of this needs to feel grim. It is a different set of trade-offs, made deliberately, with the "why" understood at every step.

What to expect in the first year

If you are new to this, expect the first year to be a year of adjustment, not perfection. You will probably undersize something (batteries are the most common one), you will learn your property's actual water yield instead of the estimate you were given, and you will find out which chores take longer than you thought. That is normal. The goal in year one is not a flawless system, it is a system you understand well enough to fix when it does not behave the way you expected.
